I just recently heard about the skincare trend of double cleansing and have to admit I am late to the party. This technique became popular in Japan and South Korea before catching on in Europe and now in North America.
What is double cleansing?
Simply put, double cleansing is the method of cleansing your face twice. But why would you want to wash twice? Isn’t this just a marketing ploy to make you spend more money on skincare products?
Stick with me because this actually makes a lot of sense and your skin will thank you for it.
The purpose of your first cleanse is to break down the daily grime, make-up, sunscreen, and excess oils. The best types of cleansers to use as your first cleanse are oil based liquid cleansers, balms, micellar waters, and/or cleansing cloths.
Now that your skin is cleaned and prepped it’s time for cleanse number two, a treatment-oriented cleanser. This second cleanse can now go to work on your freshly cleansed skin to ensure all of the benefits of the skincare’s active ingredients are being received.
Which cleansers to choose?
It is best to choose a cleanser formulated for your specific skin type. I personally love the options from Ever Skincare. Ever is a clean line of skin and beauty products backed by clinical results (aka cleanical).
For your first cleanse, I would choose Beauty Water, a make-up removing micellar water or Luminous, a decadent cleansing balm that soothes the skin. I especially love Luminous for sensitive skin types and those with dry skin (especially during the winter months).
Interested in knowing more about micellar water? I did a spotlight on this product a couple of weeks ago HERE.
For the second cleanse, Refresh is a soft foaming cleanser that features Glycolic acid and natural AHAs from fruit including sugar maple, starfruit, pomegranate and pineapple. These ingredients work together to gently exfoliate for brighter, smoother, softer skin.
If you are breakout prone and have oily skin, I love Rebalance. This is an ultra-gentle foaming gel cleanser with salicylic acid. It deeply cleanses pores and removes impurities from the skin while helping to reduce the appearance of blemishes and bumps.
When should you double cleanse?
Double cleansing doesn’t take a lot of time. I personally enjoy it as part of my evening skincare routine. You really only need to double cleanse at night because this is when you are removing an entire days worth of dirt, make-up and grime.
There is always the fear of over cleansing and compromising the the skins protective barrier so it’s good to give your skin a rest in the morning.
What products should be used post cleanse?
As with any skincare routine, it’s always important to replenish hydration to the skin. This can be done with a toner, serum and/or moisturizer. I personally love using the combination of a Hyaluronic Acid booster like Quench added to my serum, Youthful.
So what do you think? Will you start using the technique of double cleansing in your daily routine? I’d love to hear. Leave me a comment below.
